On November 18th I’ll be Homeless

Most people don’t have to wonder where they’ll spend the night. Unfortunately, some people face that exact dilemma, searching for a covered dry spot, or a shelter bed to sleep in. Tragically, many of those without homes are just kids. On any given night in Canada, there may be at least 6,000 homeless youth on the street.

Have you ever thought about where you’d sleep if you were homeless?

On November 18th I will sleep on the ground with just a sleeping bag and piece of cardboard and every chance of inclement weather in support of the youth who are homeless, trafficked or at risk at Covenant House Toronto.

Me and others are going to spend a night outside so that the youth at Covenant House Toronto can ignite their potential. We will hear their stories, and learn how they’re reclaiming their lives. At night, as we settle in to our sleeping bags on the cold, hard ground, we know we will soon go home to familiar surroundings. That knowledge makes the night bearable, but at the same time reinforces all that homeless youth do not have.

We’re sleeping outside to help the youth at Covenant House ignite their potential and reclaim their lives. Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a donation on my page.

Facts about youth homelessness

Most homeless youth are victims. Some have suffered from child abuse or violence. For many young people, their first experience of homelessness occurs well before they are entitled to access interventions and supports.  Most youth traced the origins of their homelessness back to systems failures. Finding employment opportunities in these conditions is difficult, and even a job earning a minimum wage may not be enough to pay inner-city rent.

Every day Covenant House staff see youth walk through their doors feeling powerless. They’re there to help them take back their power. Covenant House supports youth aged 16 to 24: a critical time for intervention, and a chance to change a young person’s life. Covenant House provides youth the essential services and tools they need to change their lives. Each day, as many as 300 young people are counting on Covenant House.

As winter approaches, please give what you can. Even just $80 can provide shelter and food for two youths for a night. Donations will receive a CRA tax receipt too. You can give easily and securely online here: https://covenanthousetorontoevents.ca/ui/executive21/pledge/sponsor/donation
